North Macedonia reveals ambitious energy development plans

It seems that after years of fuelling its electricity generation with lignite, North Macedonia is on its way to a coal phase-out. Looking at development scenarios of the newly approved national energy strategy, the country’s key generation asset, Bitola thermal power plant, is to be closed between 2025 and 2040.

The new national energy strategy envisions a decarbonisation of the Macedonian generation portfolio and the increased implementation of renewable energy sources. The first step on this path is the instalment of 200 MW of solar and 150 MW of wind power.
